Snow Doves, a poetic jacquard hat

1. The story of Snow Doves, this hat full of poetry
It's hard to give a specific context to this hat. I suddenly had a craving for a jacquard hat with a pattern of little birds.
The idea to put birds on a hat came to me after doing research for the podcast on the history of knitting that I published a few weeks ago.
To create this video, I searched the internet archives and came across an 18th-century embroidery image featuring a bucolic image of animals. So I drew a rather complex bird design with a touch of the curves found in Art Nouveau.
The choice of colors was more difficult for him, I decided at the last minute and I found what I was looking for by going to the Open Days of By Night Creations mid-October.
2. The construction of Snow Doves
This beanie has a classic construction.
You will start with a ribbed edge. You will then knit the body of the hat and finish with a series of decreases to form the top of the hat.
I then added a pompom but you don't have to.
3. What level of knitting is required to knit Snow Doves?

This model is not complicated in its construction, but it is still not intended for complete beginners.
You will need to know how to read a diagram but above all be able to manage the tension of the jacquard threads because the pattern is complex and you will need to have a certain mastery of pulled thread jacquard or at least an approach to this technique.
Indeed, the pattern is complex, so you will sometimes need to follow one of the two threads behind the work to avoid long lengths of unknitted yarn inside the hat.
4. Where to buy the pattern?
The pattern is for sale on the site Ravelry in French and English, it is available for immediate download. It is also available on the website Lovecrafts in English and Makerist in French.
6. The wool and materials needed to knit this hat
The suggested wool is By Night Creations Milky Way for the main color (85% merino, 15% rayon / Viscose) 400 m / 100 g. You will need about 110 to 120 m. As for the contrasting color, it is By Night Creations Comet (100% corriedale) 400 m / 100 g and you will need more or less 50-60 m. I used the colors Garance for one and Hibiscus for the other.
These colors are just suggestions as are the yarns, you can absolutely use any fingering yarn that matches the gauge as well as any color as long as the colors contrast enough for the pattern to be visible.
As for the material, you will need
- 1 2.75 mm circular needle, 40 cm long for the ribbing
- 1 3.5 mm circ. needle, 40 cm long for the body of the hat
- 1 tapestry needle to weave in the ends
- 2 markers for pattern repeats
- a faux fur pompom about 10 cm in diameter (I found it here)
7. Why Snow Doves?
Finally, why was it named Snow Doves?
For those who subscribe to my newsletter, you know that I put out a call to name this pattern.
I've been given a multitude of names, each one more beautiful than the last. It was my youngest who decided it would be called Snow Doves!
I hope you'll love this hat and that this article will inspire you to knit it. It's a perfect Christmas gift!
